Markowitz’s mean–variance defined contribution pension fund management under inflation: A continuous-time model

چکیده
In defined contribution (DC) pension schemes, the financial risk borne by the member occurs during the accumulation phase. To build up sufficient funds for retirement, scheme members invest their wealth in a portfolio of assets. This paper considers an optimal investment problem of a scheme member facing stochastic inflation under the Markowitz mean–variance criterion. Besides, we consider a more general market with multiple assets that can all be risky. By applying the Lagrange method and stochastic dynamic programming techniques, we derive the associated Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equation, which can be converted into six correlated but relatively simple partial differential equations (PDEs). The explicit solutions for these six PDEs are derived by using the homogenization approach and the variable transformation technique. Then the closed-form expressions for the optimal strategy and the efficient frontier can be obtained through the Lagrange dual theory. In addition, we illustrate the results by some numerical examples. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Due to pension fund problems in Iran, the multi-pillar social insurance system has been released in 2017. According to this, the first pillar is regarding to low income groups and finance through the public fund. The second pillar is defined benefit and finance pay as you go. The third pillar is defined contribution and fully funded finance. Contributions are transferred to the individual accou...
متن کاملA Defined Benefit Pension Fund ALM Model through Multistage Stochastic Programming
We consider an asset-liability management (ALM) problem for a defined benefit pension fund (PF). The PF manager is assumed to follow a maximal fund valuation problem facing an extended set of risk factors: due to the longevity of the PF members, the inflation affecting salaries in real terms and future incomes, interest rates and market factors affecting jointly the PF liability and asset p...

This paper studies the time-consistent investment strategy for a defined contribution (DC) pension plan under the mean–variance criterion. Since the time horizon of a pension fund management problem is relatively long, two background risks are taken into account: the inflation risk and the salary risk. Meanwhile, there are a risk-free asset, a stock and an inflation-indexed bond available in th...

The crisis of international Pay As You Go public pension systems is forcing governments of most countries to drastically cut pension benefits of future generations and to encourage the development of fully funded pension schemes. It is well-known that the reforms undertaken in most industrialized countries give a preference towards defined contribution (DC) plans rather than defined benefit (DB...

We consider a stochastic model for a defined-contribution pension fund in continuous time. In particular, we focus on the portfolio problem of a fund manager who wants to maximize the expected utility of his terminal wealth in a complete financial market with stochastic interest rate. The fund manager must cope with a set of stochastic investment opportunities and two background risks: the sala...
